MLB Scores: Twins 6, Mets 3—Mets drop middle game of the series

The Mets dropped the second game of their series in Minnesota by a 6-3 score on a night that saw the pitching staff look at least somewhat human and the lineup struggle to get going for much of the game.

Pete Alonso was the highlight of the night, as he hit a solo home run in the top of the first to put the Mets ahead. He went on to go 2-for-4, and the other hit was a double, which gives him a fantastic .356/.466/.729 line so far on the season.

The game took a turn for the worse in the bottom of the third, though, when Tylor Megill induced a two-out ground ball from Ty France with runners on the corners. While it was a routine play for Francisco Lindor, he botched it, allowing a run to score on the play. And a Carlos Correa single—a few innings before he left the game with an apparent wrist injury—plated the go-ahead run in an inning that should have ended before either run scored.

Juan Soto wasted no time in tying the game with a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth, but Megill gave up a run in the bottom of the inning to put the Twins right back ahead. The Mets trailed for the remainder of the game.

Megill surrendered another run in the bottom of the fifth, his last inning of the night, and finished with three strikeouts, no walks, eight hits allowed, and a total of four runs—just two earned—allowed.

Max Kranick gave up a couple more runs in one-and-two-thirds innings, and the Mets scored just once more when Jesse Winker hit a sac fly in a top of the seventh that saw the Mets threaten to do damage but mostly come up short.

And in the top of the ninth, the Twins seemed intent on gifting the Mets a comeback, as they made two poor throws that cost them outs and kept the inning alive. But with runners on first and third and two outs, Jhoan Duran ran up a full count before striking out Lindor to end the game.

The Mets will look to win the series with a yet-to-be-named pitcher filling in for Griffin Canning, who is ill, at 1:10 PM EDT.
