Christian Bale names the greatest comedy actor of all time

Even the best actors of their era aren’t capable of mastering every genre with effortless ease, which might explain why all-out comedy is something Christian Bale has never felt compelled to tackle.

It’s impossible to deny that he’s one of the best in the business. Bale built his reputation on complete and total commitment. It hasn’t been easy on his body, but everyone knows that if a part requires a physical transformation, they’re going to get it, whatever the cost.

That’s not to say he can’t be funny because he can under the right circumstances. American Psycho‘s Patrick Bateman is hilarious in a jet-black and bleak kind of way, while he got a decent couple of zingers in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy and brought the right amount of levity to his performances in American Hustle, Vice, and The Big Short. The less said about Amsterdam, the better, though.

It’s well-known that his early experience working on 1992’s Newsies swore Bale off ever appearing in a musical again, but why hasn’t he done a straightforward comedy that exists solely to have audiences rolling in the aisles with laughter? He could probably do it, seeing as he’s among the industry’s most versatile performers, and it’s one of the only genres he’s never attempted.

He was offered a rom-com once, and his response illuminated why the Academy Award winner has spent a four-decade career avoiding pratfalls, slapstick, and general buffoonery: “I thought they’d lost their minds.” It would be stunt casting to have Bale co-lead a frothy romantic caper, sure, but what stunt casting would it be?

Still, despite his persona being that of a relentlessly serious man who takes all of his performances relentlessly seriously, any time Bale has been asked to name his favourite movie of all time, only one immediately comes to mind, and it’s Dennis Dugan’s 1997 favourite Beverly Hills Ninja, for some reason.

It’s a popular movie, but not exactly a good one. That said, it’s guaranteed to leave Bale howling with laughter, and he described its star to Esquire as a genuine phenom of comedy. “Chris Farley was just phenomenal,” he said. “Beverly Hills Ninja will always remain one of my tops.”

“One time I sat down and watched it two nights in a row and cried with laughter both times,” he maintained. “The guy just was a phenomenon and is missed dearly in my household.” Would anyone have been able to guess that Bale was a Farley and Beverly Hills Ninja superfan? Probably not, and the combination of how often he’s said it over such a long period of time has even given rise to the pointless conspiracy theory that he’s actually lying.

It’s best to take him at his word and continue living life through the prism that not only is it the greatest movie Bale has ever and will ever see, but Farley is an unmatched comic performer who had the potential to define an era before his tragic passing at the age of only 33, less than a year after Beverly Hills Ninja was released.
