A fire on Thursday morning, April 3, destroyed the Carl’s Jr. location at Lighthouse and David avenues in Monterey. Flames flared through the roof, causing it to collapse, along with several of the structure’s walls.

There were no injuries, but the Monterey Fire Department reports the building is a total loss. No damage to nearby buildings was reported.

Smoke was reported around 6:40am. MFD crews arrived on the scene and quickly put out a call for assistance.

The first to respond entered the building and found the flames spreading. As the fire began consuming the attic and shooting through the roof, the teams went into defensive mode. Two ladder trucks allowed firefighters to spray the roof, but the blaze was beyond control.

Seven other engines, as well as a breathing support apparatus and police from the Monterey and Pacific Grove police departments combated the fire and secured the area. Traffic was allowed to continue between Lighthouse and David.

According to MFD reports, 39 firefighters from six departments—Cal Fire, Pebble Beach, Seaside, Presidio of Monterey and Monterey County Regional, in addition to MFD—were on the scene. Other trucks from Monterey County Regional, as well as Salinas and Marina, provided station coverage during the incident.

Other agencies, including the Community Emergency Response Team, Monterey Public Works, PG&E and Cal Am sent personnel. 

The cause is under investigation.
