The South Portland Police Department is asking people to avoid the area of the Maine Mall as they continue to search for a person who is suspected of shooting someone inside the mall Wednesday afternoon.Police have shared photos of the shooting suspect and said they were seen leaving the mall through the food court entrance.Anyone who spots the suspect is asked to call 911 and to not engage them.Police said firefighters transported the shooting victim to Maine Medical Center in Portland. The victim’s condition is not known at this time.The mall was shut down and evacuated while officers began their search for the suspect. It remains unclear how many people are still inside the mall at this time.Kathy Welle, who owns What The Actual Fudge inside the mall, said she closed the doors to her store and others did the same because they saw people running and were not sure what was happening at the time.The entrance to the food court area was blocked off by police tape and multiple police cruisers were parked nearby. Officers from various law enforcement agencies were also spotted outside the JCPenney nearby. Maine Gov. Janet Mills said she has been briefed on the situation at the Maine Mall.”I thank state and local law enforcement for their swift response,” Mills said in a statement. “I advise Maine people to follow the instructions of law enforcement and to avoid the area until otherwise instructed.” The South Portland Police Department said investigators believe the shooting is an isolated incident.
